'normal' islands are way to easy for me as i just set up camp near where i first get stranded then after ive built a storage campfire etc. I just make a bunch of weapons and kill all the dangerous animals its too easy for me.

Recently ive been trying hard islands, but they seem impossible as there is not even an inch of land where no dangerous animal will come therefore making it very hard to set up camp.

any suggestions on how to survive hard islands?

• build your camp really close to the water or to a big rock. animals are not able to follow you into the water or on rocks. (beware of sharks and piranhas in case of water)

• craft some spears asap! click the spoiler if you don't know how to do it
Spoiler >

put them on a hotkey and use them to kill wild animals. make sure that you always have some spears in your inventory.

How 'bout : Don't set up a fucking camp in the first place, i've played Normad on a Hard Island for some time, and trust me, i went farther than if i just set up a small camp

If you do decide to get some buildings up, you don't want anything Permanent, a Tent is great, even better if you mod in portable Fireplaces(Or Cheaper Fireplaces, Whatever), Defense turrets may look tempting, but don't get them, they just give you a false sense of security : The Turrets, so far, had never downed a single lion even once, Even if you build a line of them, they Miss, ALOT

I suggest running a lot and sticking to the shoreline until you gather enough resources to make weapons.

Additionally, building rudimentary camp is a good help. Primarily, because once you have the access to logboat, things start looking up - while in the logboat, you`re invulnerable to any dangerous animals, but still possess the ability to line your shots with spears, bow or crossbow.

Additionally, as soon as you are able to get some metalworking industry going, make a pickaxe and make it a point to destroy any lion spawnstones you stumble upon. They tend to be quite... obvious to the eye, and pickaxe can crack them easily enough - and lack of spawnstones means lack of lions.

well, you can destroy it with a bare hand, not as fast, but you get more meat then with a pickaxe
also destroy raptor nests if they are too close (guess why? )

There isn't much you can do.
Just set up a camp near water and high stones, make weapons to defeat dangerous animals and destroy all raptor nests and lion stones.

And that's all.

High priority:

-Make spears, there's a very high chance that you'll spawn with some lions nearby.

-Next to water (check for sharks or piranhas), I have to disagree with DC (oshi-) about the big rock since I've seen lions climbing those magically sometimes, not to mention that the predator won't simply give up chasing you just because you're on a rock like it happens when underwater.

-Make a tent so you can look for a temporary place to stay (lions should give you enough food and hides to last as much as you can, just keep killing them with spears).

-Destroy any lion stones or raptor nests nearby if you want some peace in your camp (pickaxes destroy them faster).

-When you have enough food to have the luxury of sitting around in your camp doing nothing try to make a fishing rod, high fishing skill saves your life in an emergency where you have no food left.

-Make a machete and collect bark from trees if you don't want to hunt lions all the time for food (also helps to keep enough bait for fishing).

-Make a Gold bow, gold will be extremely hard to find and you probably won't have enough if you try to get all in one go, find a gold stone, grab around 5 pieces and leave the rock alone for a few days so it can regenerate.

-Make a defense tower next to enemy spawn and leave it there producing arrows for your gold bow, the tower is useless in combat but I'm sure you don't have the heart to kill kiwis... Right?

-When you have time and resources, search for your island NPC, if you're lucky you can get a pirate, scientist or tribe chief (pistols and rocket launchers will make your life much easier and speed potions are useful overall).

-Save regularly.

Other than that it's just the optional but helpful stuff like camping next to fresh water, planting grapes/wheat, making fences etc... etc...

I've always thought normal and hard modes were too diferent too, if you want I made an above normal endless mode:

It's kinda like hard mode, except that it has more claw monkeys and carnivoras and less lions and raptors.
