$1,500 is expensive as hell, and we (at least I do) appreciate that you're getting the full version of Unity.
This let's you do so much more for Stranded.
Adding extra features and making the game visually better, just to name a few things.

If anyone wants to see the difference between the free version and the pro version, check this out.
There's some quite fancy features in the pro version.

And, even if you ever were to release a mobile version, Unity still let's you make iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry games for free.

It depends, really.
For already established companies I can see this being a reasonable prize.
I'm working on my first commercial game atm, which will be a game for Android. For me 1,500$ is quite expensive, and I'm still a student so I don't have so much money.
Though, this is what I like about Unity:
Their free version is very good and reasonable. They even let you earn money with it.
This way, you can release smaller budget titles and earn up some money before you buy the pro version.

So, I see what you mean, and I agree; it's a relatively low prize for such a powerful engine.
Though, for single devs like me, it's still quite expensive.
For DC the case may be the same, he's not earning much money from his free games so he might not have a huge budget. (Though, I have no idea if this is actually the case, don't yell at me if I'm wrong! He might have made a lot of money, who knows?)
But, then again, the free version is great.

I don't really know what I'm trying to get said, but I agree with you. Although, it's still depends on who's buying it.

or another way that does take time but does give you money is youtube ... you can make tons of money there and if DC starts to release stranded III updates ( maybe when it is playable ).Few minutes video or something and it would also be easier for sharing ... people would rather watch a video then read a ton of text

I hate that system.
If DC is going to earn money from Stranded III, I'd rather just straight up pay ~10-20€.
Whenever in games that I have to "donate" 5€ to get a chainsaw, or 5€ to get a healthpack, or 5€ to gain an XP boost etc, I become frustrated.
That is why I don't like F2P games, nor ANY game with micro-transactions.

Besides, it isn't donating if you get something back. If you get something back, it's paying.
"Donating" 5€ to get a special weapon is straight up paying 5€ to get it.

So if DC decides to make money from Stranded III, I hope he's not going for micro transaction and rather a straight up one-time-pay.
And I'd be glad to pay a one time fee.
I think DC is doing a great job, and he deserves something back.

I didnt meant THAT kind of donate. I just mentioned it as example. Therefore Starbound sure would have a lot of randomshit guns and stuff so if you while preordering will donate enough to make a gun that will get ingame, that would not ruin it.
DC might offer a "participate in early alpha", "NPC based on your photo" or something like that. lol.
