CY, i voted for gradient. But not for Paint SAI(i never used) that looks like a photoshop. So use MS Paint(If it doesn't make your eyesight worse).

I guess you mean that your pixel example doesn't looks flat? lol Of Course no, it is flat too. And they have different styles. First example looks like a radial gradient but second is linear gradient.
