I'm really disappointed with myself because I couldn't think of a cool name for the mod. I thought of The Top-Down Dead, but it's not really based on The Walking Dead. If you have an idea for a name - let me know.

I've been inspired to make this mod by the unexpectedly fascinating Minecraft mod pack called The Mining Dead. Similar to that mod pack, I didn't make this mod the shoot 'em up, wave after wave deathmatch kind of mod. Instead, I went with a post-apocalyptic survival scenario, where resources are scarce and the world is harsh.

I made this mod as lightweight as possible, having active multiplayer gaming in mind. It won't be heavy on the server and it won't lag the players. And yet, despite its light weight, it's got plenty of interesting features - at least, I hope they are.

This is also a mod that is highly customizable - almost every its aspect can be changed to configure it to your liking and to make your edition unique and different from others.

All right, let's talk features and screenshots now.

List of features (subject to change):
• Zombies and other enemies - kill them, don't die, rank up and get resources.
• Hunger, thirst and fatigue (tiredness) - the three basic stats that you need to keep high enough in order to survive. If you're too low, you start dying and take more damage, if they're high - you regenerate health and take less damage.
• NPC interaction - create NPCs and assign actions to them. NPCs can trade you useful items or provide you with useful information.
• Loot chests - hidden throughout the map, yours for the plundering.
• Solar flares - every now and then there's a flash in the sky. You need to run into cover (a building) and wait it out, or else it will hurt you.
• Sleeping - have a nap in the barracks. You can find beds in some safe zones and sleep in them - you'll be immobilized, but you'll restore fatigue.
• Crafting - not everything has to be bought or traded. Create new items from what you have.
• Ranks - show off how many zombies you've killed. Ranks are displayed near the name in the chat.
• Saving - almost everything is saved over game sessions.

Upcoming features (subject to change):
• A way to trade equipment (CS2D weapons and armour)
• Player-built settlements - the world is dynamic. Create your own safe haven and provide safety, cover and goods for others. You can only create a town once you've killed enough enemies, and it also costs money to keep it up.
• Enemy bosses - enemies squared. Harder versions of zombies and some other enemies that are distinguished visually. Spawn rarely, there are only a few on the map, but killing them is highly rewarding.
• Item trading - trade items with other players.
• Item dropping - drop items on the floor for other players to take. Can be disabled for lighter weight.
• Item images next to menu items - see what items look like. Can be disabled for lighter weight.
• Looting players - take trophies from fallen survivors. Or just take their food and money.

Unfortunately, owing to the limitations of CS2D, I cannot save and load ammunition, so that's a thing. I don't want to use Custom Weapons since it's quite heavy.

A video is also coming soon.

I'd be glad to hear ideas and suggestions about what you want to see. I'd also be glad to hear what you think of the mod in general - whether it's a good idea, whether you'll play it or not. All feedback is valuable.

Instead of numbers you would use images for hunger and thirst, just like in Stranded. I like idea with flares.

I might do, as a feature that can be disabled. You've got to keep in mind that every image is additional server strain.

Why don'tcha just make a game? The idea is nice, but it'll die off just like your epic space mod did. Or maybe not, since kids around here like to kill zombies.

I made a game out of my epic space mod. I might do the same with this - it is definitely a possibility.

@user EngiN33R: Nice. Looking forward to this mod, even if it fails. BTW, is the space mod game released or is it sitting in your HDD?

*Edit* NVM. Checked out your blog.

Just call it six feet under and let me test.

Also the random name I chose is actually good, yea, go with that.

This mod looks very cool!

I hope I can be a tester, PM me or contact via Skype if you want. Email would be fine but it's for rare use.
Do not get the idea I do not play Counter-Strike 2D because of my profile, I just do not have a lot of time these days.

@user Yates: That's a good name. It does not give you the feel with zombies but the creativity is nice.

i like it

@user Yates:

that name is really cool, but no one gonna find it.

they would find it easily under "The Dead Walking 2D" or something else.. (creativity down, but gamers would find it"

But... That series has nothing to do with this except for dead people. And besides, while it's a pretty name, it has no associations with the subject of the mod and doesn't in any way describe it.

It's good we've got volunteers for testing. I'll contact you when I'm ready.

Crafting is now in.

• Crafting recipes are fully customizable.
• You need to learn crafting recipes in order to use them. Some recipes are learnt by default.
• Crafting recipes have a chance of failing, which is variable per recipe. There is also a global default if a chance is not specified.

I'll contact testers once I do player-built towns, which I've already begun working on. It shouldn't take long.

Well, that's a bummer, since normal npcs are slow and not cool. There is a lot of ways to reduce laggs in custom scripted npcs.

When did you get that optimization-addiction? After Minecraft?
