You have a button in front of you. If you press it one person will die, but you will save ten people. If you don't press it that one person won't die but those ten people will.
Will you handle the responsibility and kill 1 to save 10? Or will you instead abstain from pressing the button, thus not killing anyone but letting 10 people die? Why?

@user Alistaire: No one. Let's say it's a random person that is in no way affiliated with you. He isn't morally good, nor is he morally bad, completely neutral.

Then who cares. Why not wait, it's not like you're murdering anyone that way.

@user Alistaire: But that is the point.
If you press the button you will know you murdered someone, but you will also know you saved 10 people.
If you don't press the button you will know you let 10 people die.

The ideal choice is obvious. But since we are psychological beings and not mere machines stuff like religious belief and all that come into play. Me? I'd probably be able to push the button but I can't say for sure.

This would have been a much better question if we were to chose between our own life and that of ten people. 99% of the people here would save themselves.

This thread seems to be Dark Knight's reference.
Nobody have right to decide about other's life, imo.

Button pressed:
10 alive, 1 dead

Otherwise:
10 dead, 1 alive

(10-1=9) or (1-10=-9) ? Of course if 1 human = 1 human(paradoxically, they aren't always equal).

I'd always choose a lesser evil so I'd keep pressing the button. The person isn't connected to me so I have no responsibilities over him. People die. Big deal. At least I'll save 9 times as much as I kill so I'll consider myself good rather than bad person who murders people. If I don't see how people die then It's not a big deal actually. But then again, it sounds horrible if some random person presses button and I die in order to save 10 people. But he saves 10 people... You can argue with this question. Good one.

There was a pretty long debate about this after 9/11. They were talking about whether or not it was allowed to shoot a plane with innocents in it down before it can crash into a building and kill the innocents in the building. I'm not sure what I would do, but I guess I would save 10 and let 1 die. Still, I don't know. Decisions like that are very hard to make. Not really something you can think of before it happens.

There must be an option called

"Kill all of them"

It depends on the importance of the subjects. If the one person is super-important i would sabe him, if not, i will kill him to save the rest.

How about replacing that one person with yourself and order him/her to press the button? Probably it's the best way, because we can only decide about our life.

@user Avo: That would be too easy because then either most here would press "Yes" without thinking, or "No", again without thinking.
While right now the lives of other people are in your hands.
