Hi i am relatively new to cs2d which i love to play (its almost like a multi-player gta 2).
-Anyway since downloading and playing it for about 1 week i have experienced a rebirth of some malware that i had previously uninstalled, and thought i had gotten rid of.
-The malware was a package including "blue-chromium browser". I assumed the infection occurred previous to my install of cs2d and was unrelated, however the malware seemed to come back after playing cs2d for about a week, and seemed that it may be associated with my playing of cs2d.
-What are the chances of downloading viruses/ malware with the joining of servers/ downloading of maps etc...?
Has this happened to anyone else?
By the way, i have zero malware/virus protection on this computer.

I feel quite sad for you there.

Both the Installation file and the zip file that the official CS2D website provides are free of malwares. Please only download from official website

I'm sure CS2D has loopholes somewhere, I've played CS2D for a long time, no malwares came in this way.

What do you expect if you have zero protection and browsing high risk websites at the same time? Grab an antivirus or enable Windows Defender if you are using Windows 10.

As of now there is no known way for malware infection via CS2D. File transfers would be the most obvious way but CS2D makes sure that only legit files and no binaries are transferred.

It might be possible that the used BlitzMax libraries for image and audio loading have vulnerabilities so that manipulated images/sounds can be used to execute code. I'm not aware of such issues though.

I think in your particular case you either simply didn't get fully rid of your malware or you infected yourself again the same way like you did before - and very certainly not via CS2D.

Like user Talented Doge I highly recommend to get proper antivirus/antimalware software. Not using any of this is careless and way too risky when your PC is online.

There is absolutely no way you can get a virus from CS2D. CS2D only downloads images and sounds, and no other types of files. If you have recently been browsing some shady websites, you should really get an antivirus. I really like Avira, it's free and offers very good protection.

The only way I know to spread binaries by images is to pack the binaries into the images themselves via rar or zip, combine the archive and the image and then simply send the image file. There could be a way to execute a binary file when opening the image file but it's unlikely that someone did something like that, but it's not impossible.

From my point of view, I believe that you only uninstalled the malware version of chromium browser itself, malwares often make copies around the disk to silently execute code in the background.

But yeah, get yourself an antivirus.

No. Never ever think like that about any program. All software you run has the ability to be exploited, all software you run can be attacked.

I meant when downloading simple maps or anything from a server. But when downloaded from unrealsoftware.de, there is a chance of a virus attack. It's mostly LUA. Whenever downloading anything, first scan it, repair it and then use it.

Of course, worms are types of malware which you don't have to use, just download it from a shady website, (it's always disguised) and it will instantly infect the files you execute by adding it's code to them. Some superior malware will delete useless code (providing there is any) and add it's own code to prevent detection.

Also, I doubt that the rebirth of the malware on your PC was an affect of CS2D, unless, like I said, it was infected, but at that point, it isn't CS2D's fault, since it was infected by a worm. Also, it could be any infected program that you ran, not just CS2D. Also, you said that you deleted the malware before you even installed CS2D, so there is almost no way that it's CS2D that was infected.

CS2D could have a security flaw in its download routine. Whenever you open up any kind of internet connection you're able to be infected.

Well thanks to you all, i seem to have gotten rid of the malware which i do not believe had anything to do with cs2d. It was just a coincidence i'm guessing. Though some of these newer replies seem to be suggesting virus via cs2d is possible.
Anyway i have since re-installed cs2d and i will take my chances for now. Thanks for the replies.
-By the way the particular malware package i got was probably from a fake "codec pack" i downloaded off of the net which was unofficial, and infact malware.

I don't know if this is still relevant since you already solved your problem, but i also wanted to let you know you should be careful downloading anti-viruses from the net since half the time they even come with their own trojans or viruses. There are other (authorized) sites that provide free anti-viruses as well as malware/ransomware tool-kits you can use to clean your computer!

I recommend using ESET, or MalwareBytes since i use them both. Personally, never had any problems with CS2D or viruses in general for years.

Regarding Lua: The security protection for that is that it only runs on servers. So as a normal client who just joins other servers you should be safe. Also the only Lua scripts you ever receive via transfer is the Lua script that can be bundled with the map. And executing that is disabled by default for security reasons so you don't accidentally run malicious Lua scripts made by others when starting their map (again: these also only run on server side so you would have to start a game with that map yourself).
See cs2d cmd mp_luamap

Also newer Windows versions come with security center and built-in virus/malware protection. Just make sure that that stuff is running properly and you already have some protection.
