That's actually amazing.
I think, this is most popular 2D game.
This game needs something special to be more "alive".
There are max 150 players in everyday.
I will try to do more CS2D videos in YT, maybe that is a solution.

I knew the numbers of course (I even shared them on Steam) but it's still quite amazing to see CS2D in such a list next to many games I know or even played.

It's kind of unfair though to directly compare CS2D with other games because CS2D is free and most of the other games there aren't.

The numbers also mean however that CS2D is really bad in keeping players interested. Unfortunately I don't have any tracking except for some Steam values. Would be interesting to see what players do and why so many don't play much / at all after installing the game.

I think one of the main factors in the declining number of players is simply because the original Counter-Strike series isn't as popular any more. Even CS:GO has fallen out of the mainstream. One of the main things that used to draw players to CS2D last decade was due to the popularity of CS 1.6 and Source and people enjoyed a free alternative to them, many of them because their PCs couldn't even properly run the 3D CS (I was one of them back in 2008). Nowadays it's really hard to find someone still using a computer that can't run them, unless you haven't upgraded or bought a new one since the early 2000s.

Another thing that probably makes new players stop playing after first installing through Steam is that, besides there not being many servers, the ones that are popular are populated with experienced players, some of them that play since the first versions, that give them absolutely no chance of winning. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that if you're good at the game then you should let the ones that aren't kill you and win, I'm just saying that many new players don't want to "git gud" and give up easily without practising more and learning about the game.

As you are really open to numbers @user DC: , i knew (or was at least pretty certain about it) you wouldn't have any problems with me posting this, and it is nice to know to see how good a game is doing in comparison to other games.

For my example I have chosen Battleborn on purpose, as it turned F2P, after it failed to compete with other games like Overwatch. But I guess it was already to late to save the game. Another game of this genre (eventough it isn't played to much anymore) is Dirty Bomb which is close to 5.75 million.

The numbers of Evolve Stage 2 are also quite interesting.

Not sure if we should move this thread to offtopic, if anyone else wants talk about the numbers in general I guess offtopic would be better then CS2D.

Regarding the decrease of active cs2d players: One part is in my opinion youtube, a big youtuber make a video about it, so a lot of his subscribers will try it out themself and put it away after a few round. For me as older player CS2D is a casual game you can enjoy playing with your friends. But it offers to less to catch my interest for a longer period of time. My "game time" is limited and there are a lot of available games, not to mention that I'm currently "addicted" to FF XIV *damn MMORPGS* But I was quite active for about 1 months after CS2D hit steam, but as soon as you don't start a game daily there is a risk that you won't start it ever again, or at least don't start if for a long time (until you read something about a big new feature, or something like that)

But I guess the core audience for CS2D are younger people.

@user medeiros: Regarding, the "git gud" mentality. In my opinion you are right, as for most players it is not fun to lose and it can get frustrating. So when I opened a server, and there were less players on it and I recognized that the other player was weaker, I was playing worse on purpose (buying weaker weapons and stuff), otherwise they were leaving after 3 rounds.

Why do people not return to CS2D after a while?

I believe that to be a relatively simple question to answer - I believe the smallest portion of people will actually play CS2D for competitive reasons, so there is nothing to bring them back. Of course there are achievements and possibilities to be creative, but they rather difficult to work out (good maps are hard work, and scripting can be an insurmountable obstacle for many).

What servers get people back again and again? Role play Servers and so on where you can achieve things in the long run.

So basically, to keep players coming back for reasons apart from boredness, you require long term achievements that give people an advantage, even if only visual etc. Unfortunately, the open structure behind CS2D and the diverse nature of it kinda rules that out - there is no uniform goal throughout CS2D servers.

Tl;dr: I have no clue what could be done without changing the way CS2D works.

But congrats on the high ranking!

Just imagine you`re new player in this game, what will bring you back next time? Servers? Possibility of visible progress? Steam cards?

New generation is coming and they won't stay on anything which isn't fully automatic/easy to use, nice looking and being updated frequently with new skins, game modes etc.

And don't forget that big part of them don't know what CS is. So CS2D needs single player mode with some cool story and progressive gameplay which would teach them progressively everything about the game.

Single player should be made so by the time a player finishes it, he is ready to play on multiplayer servers.

In my opinion, the reason behind this is that there is no any "player progress" in the game. I have no levels, experiences, some other statistics and stuff like that except for achievements which only a few of us care about them anyway.

As the games of nowadays, can you see a single kind without levelling stuff among them? I'm talking about the games that try to keep their players to the game itself and not lose even a single player.

Look, I am not saying let's add a level system to the game. I mean, new players should see their process, what they have done while playing the game and so. CS2D needs to get used to present-day needs and then get in a status where it can provide those needs.

For an example, tonight I'm going to match 5v5 ranked game in CS:GO. When the match finishes, it shows me everything I've done during the match. I see my experience gain, how the rounds went so far, items if dropped any and many more. And then I do not feel like I did nothing when I close the game. Because my levels and statistics just stay there even after I close the game.

This is something CS2D needs, genuinely.

Oh, and what I meant to say before: Setting up servers is way too difficult, I bet that is a great negative factor - not sure how to fix that, but couldn't servers use the same type of connections as the clients, so you don't need to go through any firewall mess? It should be all in- and outcoming UDP packets for both of them anyhow?

CS2D needs something to attrack players to play everyday like matchmaking or else you get noone like atm. Is so painful, I want to play but after some mins I just quit because playing in public and rekt new players is not funny.
Getting casual updates is good but sometimes you need make nice features to get old players back. You prefer getting new players who will quit in few days or old players who are loyal to this game (with +2000h of gameplay) and try to play when they don't get much attention?
For now I don't see a reason to comeback for cs2d, I prefer to try new games who the devs listen the players and give decent updates.
