Probably you don't really know what you're asking.

Byte is simply used as ASCII char from 0 to 255.
I've made some int to char saving functions old time ago. (Code is bellow)
Of course, I recommend to use Lee's reminiscent blitz functions.
I guess you still can find them in early pages of this thread.
