you should try the following ones. they are my favorite RPGs:

• Gothic I, II and III (III only with community patch)

• Fallout 3 (maybe not the best idea when you want an RPG because it's much like a shooter as well. however it's a VERY awesome game. I spent hours playing it.)

Silent_Control has written
Just because a game does not have uber-mega-ultra cool graphics does not mean that it sucks. It is an extraordinary game because of its complexity.

The same applies to > Nethack, which is also a nice (and really hard) RPG, based on D&D rules.

The graphical interfaces even disturb the fun of playing imo

I suppose it depends on what kind of RPG you like. Do you like traditional "take turns" style or real-time? Do you like older RPGs like ones for SNES or NES or do you like 3D? Single player type or MMORPG/MUD type?

Most of the FFs other than the ones you say not to mention are pretty good. FF Tactics is pretty good, it's an oddball of the FF series. I haven't played FF Tactics Advanced or the new one for DS though. Star Ocean: Til the end of Time is pretty good. It's real-time style battle system is pretty neat. If you can get past the Disney characters... Kingdom Hearts (Real-time) is good also. Shadow Hearts is a more traditional take turns style. It has an interesting twist that makes battling more involved though. Cavestory has some RPGish elements to it. It's pretty short but there should be mods and stuff online for it. It's a shooter that's a bit similar to Metroid. I can't tell you all that is good. There's too many good RPGs out there to name only a few. It really depends on what kind you want.

You could always look at freeware sites for freeware RPGs and whatnot. There is usually reviews for them too.
