Hello there.
Recently I've been hosting servers but something puzzles me.
I host a server from home from a modem and players can come. But when hosted from a different computer with Broadban/LAN - cable internet, it won't work(Yes, I've turned off the firewall and there is no router).
Well that's not my point. My point is that the upload speed of my internet with a modem very differs from the download speed(it's about 10 times lower than it's download!).
On the other hand, on the cable internet the upload speed is nearly the same as the download(very high which is perfect for a fast server).
What would cause this and any available solutions?
I have heard that obtaining a static ip adress might solve my problem.

no a static IP address does not solve the problem. an IP address can't change your download/upload speeds. this is a hardware and/or ISP limitation. it is common that the upload speed is much lower than the download speed. you can't do anything about it.

only solution is to use another connection. like broadband instead of modem.

the only answer can be that there is something blocking the connection. the most common hosting problem.
- firewall
- router
- other programs
- other hardware
- your ISP

Well that's just weird, I turned off the firewall, no router and I don't remember any programs(firewalls).
Moreover I've tried on more computers with the same connection, just won't work. I guess I have to host it from a modem then.

When you say "won't work" what exactly is the problem? Is the server not showing up in the serverlist? Has anyone tried connecting directly by IP? Does it kick people when they try to join?

I had issues with my server not showing up in the list, but people were able to connect by IP. I found that after hosting it for up to an hour it would eventually show up in the list. How long did you leave the server up?

Your connection speed shouldn't make any difference as to weather the server will "work" or not, it should really only effect performance. If people are unable to connect by IP, then it is most likely a security settings issue.
