And, personally, Audacity's interface is so simple a baby could use it. I mean, all the buttons that you absolutely must have are HUGE.

A really good free converter is BonkEnc which is a batch music converter with functions for extracting files from CDs, getting album data from freeDB and a simplified user interface but with all the control over the encoders. And to take it one step further, the PortableApps guys made it completely portable, so you can download the archive, extract and run it directly from the folder. No installation necessary.

Don't forget to download the MP3 plugin. (Link copied from the "features" section of the BonkEnc Portable page. Again, all nicely packaged on their site and hosted on FOSS central "sourceforge").

I believe there is a free alternative to any paid for software out there... I haven't been proved wrong yet...
