I have used many different programs (not just for Lua), like:
-Notepad
-Aptana Studio
-UltraEdit
-Komodo Edit
-Eclipse
-HTML-Kit
-Scriptly
-Arachnophilia
-CoffeeCup HTML Editor
-EditPlus
-EmEditor
-HateML Pro
-Adobe HomeSite
-NoteTab
-PSPad
-jEdit
-TopStyle
-TSW WebCoder
-TextPad
-Notepad ++
Now I just use Notepad ++ just because nice, works better and faster than some of the others, and its free.
A lot of the other programs ranged from $20-$300. I did use Komodo Edit for the fact that is was a cross-platform program that could make code for just about anything... but it cost $295.

For lua I use Notepad++, but when I first started scripting I used the standard MS notepad.

I wanted to use Ultraedit instead of MS Notepad first, but Ultraedit doesn't support lua (or at least I don't think so).

Notepad & Notepad ++ for editing source scripts for customizing my own SP source games & mods. This usually goes hand in hand when I'm reskining / retexturing the models & parts of the maps.
