Hey guys. I already use FTP a bit from time to time, but recently I started it more frequently to upload my WordPress (.org) installation and that stuff to my website.
But I've tried 3 FTP clients to see which one was the best, and then decided to make a topic of which is your FTP client software (or what ever it's called, I also included online/web browsing FTPs that act as they were software).
I'm not an expert on this, in fact I just know how to connect and upload (that's what FTP is lol), not any other advanced stuff.
The 3 first options on the list are the ones I already used, and my favourite one has to be FireFTP as it's an add-on for Firefox which, of course, can be ran simply in a browser tab.
The rest I picked from Wikipedia. If you don't find your favourite there, just pick "Other" and tell me here in a reply. If your pick gets popular I include it on the poll.

Yo, brah, SFTP is not a client, it is a protocol.

Anyway, on Windows I use FileZilla, on Linux/BSD/other UNIX stuff I use the good old fashioned ftp command, it's way easier.

FTP means File Transfer Protocol.

I get that, but what does it do.

In simple words, a FTP software (which this thread is about, to find about 'FTP' as itself, go to Wikipedia or something) is used to upload files in to your website (I'm talking about those websites created from scratch from hosters, not noobish generated ones from uCoz, Webs, etc.).
I currently use FireFTP, which is runned through my browser (Firefox) to upload files to my blog, in this case I use it to upload WordPress, themes, plugins, images, etc.

user DannyDeth made it even easier.
FTP = protocol used to transfer files
FTP software = used to use FTP ()

Oh I get it. It's just that I have no website ._.
Cause I have no domain ._.
Cause I have no money.

You can have a 'pro-looking' website without paying anything + no ads and shit like the generated ones.
All you need to do is learn HTML, CSS (in case you want to design it, if you choose to have a blog like me you don't need this), basic stuff about websites (how they work, what's a control panel (Cpanel, VistaPanel, etc.)) and for a domain you need to know how to set it's DNS records.
You can have a cool domain (not those redirection ones which suck!) at cz.cc (I use this one), co.cc (I used to use this one), cc.cc, co.tv and more (stuff like eu.tt, de.vu, pt.vu, etc. are only for redirection and don't offer a 'real' domain).
But this is getting a bit off-topic, and I bet user DannyDeth will simplify it.

You only need like... 10-15 Euro ( per year... awesumz.. ) to buy a domain, and there are many free hosting companies out there that give you decent storage space and great bandwidth limits.

So why the hell not make a site?

It's that I'm not rich enough for such jokes.

Just read my reply. Get a free one that works like a .com, .net, and so on. It does the same shit, although less professional.

Your profile:
Website: Thinking about to make one

Then don't use any home page generator, start learning HTML and the hosting basics. Trust me, at 10 years old I already knew the basics. And that was... 3 years ago?

Commercial websites...

What the hell are you talking about? Making a website for a company is not mkaing a 'commercial website,' it is just plain ol' coding.

Oh god, a website is a website, a commercial website would obviously refer to a website that is used commercially, but there is no need to call it a commercial website.

Btw, can I see one?
