hello again. i have an important question about using the files created by other users.
i read rules but found nothing

(1) so if i download a file from file archive and in description of it written
• Do not edit it
• Do not say that it is your
but i want to use it in my mod. if i'm using it in my mod i am neither editing it nor saying its mine - so everything is legal? I just have to mention the author in readme and description of the mod and that's all? because I'm not doing anything that file author prohibited

(2) another situation :
if it is written in file description that
• you can use that file
if it also mean that I can use it in my mod? (with mentioning the author in readme and description of the mod of course)

(3) if it is written in description that
• you must not steal and reupload the file
but i'm not stealing It if I mention that this file in my mod is not mine, and mention the author in readme and description of the mod, yes?

(4) if it is nothing written in file description about its use and so on - it mean that i can freely use it in my mod mentioning the author in readme and description of the mod?

...and wait a year for answer? no, thanks) and with my team i'm making a big global mod and it would be a terrible headache to write to every author of all files we need

1. Ask the creator to use it
2. It means that you can use it in game for personal using, not in the mod.
3. If you're using a file in your mod without it's author, it's called stealing.
4. No, it means that author is to lazy to write it. Look at the 1 point.

read: i'll write that i'm not an author and write the author's name.

it is not stealing

But it's still better to ask the creator of the file

You have to be very careful with this because you can easily violate the law in all scenarios you named!

Most important thing to remember:
√ Always ask the original file author for permission if there is the slightest doubt!

(1): The author just says that you are not allowed to edit it and that you are not allowed to say it's yours. He does NOT say what you are actually allowed to do.
This means: You always have to ask in this case before using the file!

(2): Use for what? This permission is not very clear. You always have to ask in this case before using the file!

(3): Again the author just says what you are NOT allowed to do.
This means: You always have to ask in this case before using the file!

(4): This is a very simple and very clear case as well: You always have to ask in this case before using the file!

illegal You automatically have - by default - no permissions (except personal use) unless stated otherwise in the description or unless the author gives you the permission after asking. illegal

Of course you do not have to ask if you download the file for personal use only. You are allowed to use all files in the archive for personal use. Personal use means that you use them just for yourself without sharing them with others. Files which are not intended for personal use should not be uploaded to the public file archive of Unreal Software!

√ Do not take any risk! Asking doesn't hurt!

@user Don Captione: You are only allowed to use files from others if you have their permission. So:
× NEVER use files if you don't know who made them and if you didn't ask for permission first!

I can't stress this enough: Taking and using/modifying files from others without their permission is copyright infringement. It's a serious crime.

I still don't get why you are making so strict rules of copying files. This slows down the whole modding community because every person has to re-invent the wheel multiple times due to restriction of copying same part.
The Modiquette
Look at this set of rules, it is more effective in my opinion. And still if someone is against usage of their uploads, they can just state it in description.

@user Silent_Control: Perfectly fine. Users can add that to their description to tell others that their stuff is published under these conditions. But it's the decision of the file owners and not mine.

@user Navy Seal: Because I'm also liable for copyright infringement that is going on here and mainly because I receive all the complaints about stolen stuff and the moderators and me have to clean that shit up which is incredibly annoying.
Also I'm not the one who makes the rules about file copying. Those rules are made by the corresponding authors by defining the rules for their own work and also by the copyright law which automatically exists for everything you create (at least here in Germany and German law is the one which counts on this website as it is from Germany).

I'm not telling people to disallow others to copy their stuff! I'm just telling people to respect the work of others and to ask for permission before using stuff made by others!
