That's actually not a bad idea. I've been considering this for a while now, but I've stuck out with Battlefield 2D. In fact, I'm still considering this option. This still largely depends on the prospects of the game, as since the game has been published already, a name change would kill the marketing/ advertising efforts I've done earlier.

You live up to your signature, no sarcasm. cookie Sorry for my earlier hostility. I took you for one of those "other" guys-- but you're not.

As long as it's free and maybe get money from donations/advertise, being sure that no law is broken, with the proper develop, it could turn into a quite nice game imo.

@user Sirosky:
Indeed it might but you could market your offshoot project as "made by the same guys who brought you Battlefield2D". That way if you do stop earning revenue from BF2D, but you wish to go commercial you can do so with another project while still keeping a decent marketing plan and keeping a name for yourself.
I advise you to make a name for yourself/group and display your group as the creators of whatever project you might make. Just be careful with copyright laws - I had, at one point, a scare or two, but since then I've learned what I have done wrong, and learned what to, or not to do when it comes to intellectual property.

Also my signature changes with my mood. My previous one was rather immature actually (and was a result directly from me getting annoyed at people who ask questions without reading the first post leading to them getting temporarily banned), so I've since changed it into a Mass Effect 2/3 reference. Beep boop? :3

And good luck with the project! Don't take people bashing your game to heart. Try to take all criticisms (immature or not) as something you might want to check on/change/fix in your project.

Interestingly, I've had the same thoughts as you. I'm emailing the copyright division of EA. Going to start some talks with them first-- if they ever respond.

They'll most likely outright say "NO YOU CAN NOT HAS MY BABY!1!111!!one" and then threaten you with possible lawsuits. I saw a thread some time ago where a person asked some firm's lawyer if they could use a name that they owned in one of his personal projects. With which the firm simply replied with "No".

So long as you have BF2D as a free fan game, then I see no problem in it existing. There is always the possible danger of being sued regardless because you are using EA's namesake of a game's IP that they own and have copyrighted. So if and when that happens, you'll definitely have to change the name of your project.

And again, good luck with things! I don't skin/sprite/make mods much these days but you're free to use whatever you might fancy from my fileshare on this website. Guns, etc, just be sure to credit me and everything'll be hunky dory.
Some examples of my work if you're interested:
file cs2d Fallout 3 .44 Magnum Revolver [gfx+sfx]
file cs2d Precision Scope Pack [+cursors/pointers]
file cs2d (XM)M21 (SWS) Scout replacement pack
file cs2d AK47 overhaul pack (+sfx!)

Anyway that's enough of me advertising my own work . I must go and submit a couple of documents in the city.

These advertisements suck. I'm 99% sure that money will go straight to your pocket. Anyway, why bothering giving money to charity?

Since when have you seen a good advertisement? And I suppose you've forgotten about proof. Why give money to charity? You've got some real problems, kid.

Can make one in 5 minutes (even in Paint). Eh.

Yeah, why? You didn't answer the question. Why would you want to waste your money?

@user oxytamine: Lol again keyboard warriors appeared.

You dont like it? No one forces you to try it nor to discuss about it.

About the game, i tried it.

I state this:

√ Moving vehicles - [maybe add an option that the vehicle can move with relative direction of the aim?]

√ Background and environment of default maps

√ Weapons

√ Helicopters

√ Menu

× Death sound [yuk it disgusts me sometimes xd]

× Not available: Change control buttons so that everyone can customize every button to feel confortable as they like. [Options Menu]

× Few maps, should be more default ones

× For now only 2 modes

∗ Maybe add money so that someone can buy those weapons at beginning + all other stuff.

∗ ∗ ∗ Add a Controls Option

∗ By enabling the controls option, a way to change to "last used weapon" [like CS2D has].

∗ When moving there should be steps being heard

∗ Connected with the previous one, a button that can make the player walk stealthy.

∗ Fix the bugs that appear when the game starts

∗ Enable full screen or window mode [i think you dont have it? idk xd]

∗ More environment sounds [zombie sounds were nice btw]

These are just some fast thoughts about the game, overall it's a good try from you
