Hello.
I am currently working a little indie project. It is supposed to be a top down shooter with "Shiny graphics, 3D effects and all that stuff". The genre is RPG/Sci-fi/Horror.
Since this forum is mostly dedicated to Game development I would like to ask you as a community about your opinion on this project.
Do you think Top Down shooters are still interesting? If so, do you think it would be able to compete against other indie projects on the market?
I would like to hear a general opinion. Nothing specific since the game is in early stages and currently posting screenshots or uploading videos is pointless.
Thank you.
Respectfully
Erik.

Yes, as long as you use decent graphics. Graphics and effects are the most important, I belive. And also don't add PvP because it makes some people rage.

Thanks for the reply.
Well. Graphics as far as I know are just candy eye. I am trying to make gameplay and graphics equally as good.

I agree with @
Starkkz the graphics is the most important and the gameplay i think and yes the top down shooters are still interesting in some way.

If graphics were so important mind telling me two things, why Counter-Strike 2D (used to be/is) popular and Subvein never was..?
It's all about game-play. Graphics do not mean anything, actually. Of course it can't look like crap but you get the point.

Yates: because it can be modified with Lua scripts. I know some people I've invited to play this game and they didn't play it just because they didn't like the player skins. I didn't start playing this game because of the graphics either, I just learnt a bit of scripting through it and kept it up because it improved my mathematic and English knowledge.

And that's why there were more people playing before Lua was added than today I assume.
The story, and game-play define a great game. The graphics don't do that at all. I do agree that graphics persuade people to play, but game-play makes them stay.
I think top down shooters it`s a boring and hard-to-make-a-cool idea.
CS2d for ANDROID Discord server is here: https://discord.gg/ww59nvf

If its a horror game you should work on the lightning.
Hehe. This is what I worked on the most.

Yates: today, people is stopping playing Counter-Strike 2D. It is dying because there's nothing new. And Lua can't do anything about it. In my opinion the game play of this game just sucks, there are already too many of these, what would it make this game so different from these?

Well, Hotline Miami was big success, so I think it's definitely possible to hit the market.
Gotta agree with

imho tho', I think that Horror genre will become mainstream sooner or later, so keep that in mind.
I agree with @
Yates: think about other games like Minecraft and Five Nights at Freddy's and few other games, they have BAD graphics but they are VERY popular because of their gameplay and storyline

Look at me standing, here on my own again

Mami Tomoe: that's much different, you're comparing a top down shooter with a 3D game.

So basically its all about representation and how much love you put in it. GTA I and II is technically a top down shooter but the overall freedom in the game and never before seen features made it what it is today.
If there is anything to it other than shooting or killing things from the top down perspective, then it can be interesting. CS2D is an exception due to its modifiable content.

Raisun: Fallout 3 and New Vegas both use Gamebyro so it has nothing to do with the engine making the game ugly. It was the developers that screwed the it up.

I am trying to add a huge enemy diversity unique in almost every aspect, which I believe was not seen in any top down shooter before.
Also the weapons pretty much come in with parts. You have to build them from scratch using the parts you find on the map. Each part has "Levels" According to which stats on the particular weapon part are generated. Each weapon part is also unique in a way. It is not just stats that will make you decide what to use.
My idea is to make huge weapon diversity. Not just an assault rifle with a different barrel, but crazy ideas such as rocket flak minigun, or plasma thrower or stuff like that.
Believe me, I would honestly like to post screenshots but the engine is currently at around 89% done. Then I have to work on the textures and after that I can post a tech demo.
The game world is physics based, you can move blocks, push them, destroy buildings, barricade buildings, pretty much anything to get tactical advantage.
