What unit does weapons range use

Hello, this could've been posted in the general category but I'm using this knowledge to script, so I wasn't sure.
I'm here to ask the following.
What does weapon range actually mean, is it pixels?
In the CS2D website it claims that the Flamethrower has a range of 55, but that doesn't make any sense in pixels, does it?
The range is actually more like 7 tiles which is like 224 pixels!
So, what does the number actually mean?
Is it the pixels divided by 4?
