i have grains
i weild grains
and i maked cursor down (to the ground)
and then says i need grains to hand

select the grains in your inventory and press the hand icon. afterwards use the ground with the use key (E by default)

i had the same trouble too awhile back. I really think it should be more clear on the put in hand and then aim at ground and push E thing.
