its probably something related to random island or I think you are using massive mod perhaps?
re-download and install.
OR:
open mods/Stranded II/sys/game.inf and change the line with terrain_color_sawmp to terrain_color_swamp. afterwards save it and start Stranded II
(if you are using a mod: use the mod's folder instead of the Stranded II folder)
I get an error (in windows not SII) at the main menu about video card failure and that it has been repaired and reinstalled and the island turns black and screen gets "choppy" then island turns into wood
please download the game from the rapidshare mirror. it should work.
I'll fix the version uploaded at unrealsoftware.de
for general graphic/video/startup errors: try fullscreen/windowed and try new and older video card drivers.
