Hi Folks,

I wanted to use a few custom key bindings for my controls in CS2D, but for some of the keys that I wished to use I see "Can't bind! Invalid key" in the console.

Anyhow, I'm assuming that the keys that I wanted to use ([ and ]) are not supported by the game... but I was simply wondering why they were not.

Are they used elsewhere in the game (hence, hardcoded so that you can't use them for custom key bindings)? Is there any non-standard way or workaround to be able to use those keys?

There were also a few other keys on my keyboard that I couldn't use, but I forget offhand which one that they were (I think that another one was ').

P.S. Is there a list of valid keys documented anywhere for the game (e.g. leftarrow, leftctrl, etc...)?

Thanks in advance for any info

Thanks for the info, but I still can't use the "[", "]", and "'" keys for any of the game's controls (?).

@user IPC CS2D: Lolno, changing a key to a used key will just remove the first used key and give the key to the other.
@user RichNagel: Why you have to use "" and [] ?
Just select another key instead

I was simply trying to set up CS2D exactly like I have my controls configured for regular CS16 and CS:CZ (well, as close as possible, given the differences of the games).

Anyhow, I have a REALLY STRANGE controls setup for CS16 and CS:CZ (Click Here <GRIN>), and use those keys ([ ] ') for various functions

It's probably caused by differences in the German/English keyboard layout. I'm not sure. [ and ] are on the keys 8 and 9 on German keyboards and they can only be used by pressing the Alt Gr key at the same time.

Ahhh... that probably explains it. Thanks for the info, DC

Just out of curiosity, where are the { and } keys on a German keyboard? On an English keyboard, they are Shift[ and Shift] .

(Edit) I just did a Google image search for the German keyboard layout, and answered my own question. Wow... I don't think I'd ever be able to type on that thing LOL!

(SECOND EDIT) WOOHOO! I just managed to figure it out, and make it work!

I found a picture of a German Keyboard HERE (for reference, a picture of an English Keyboard HERE), and going by the info that you posted:

EN = DE
[ = (
] = )
' = "

So, I simply added:

bind "(" "COMMAND"
bind ")" "COMMAND"
bind """ "COMMAND"

...to my "Controls.cfg" file, and now I can use the [ , ] , and ' keys

(EDIT NUMBER 3)

@DC,

After a little trial and error, I figured out that the "\" key on an English keyboard is what the game internally calls "conkey".

Of course, when I tried to simply bind "\", the console reported that it wasn't a valid key. Also, when pressing the "\" key on my keyboard within the game's controls setup menu, nothing happened... but I was able to add the "conkey" binding to my CFG file.

Anyhow, long story short:

I was ALSO wishing to use my CAPSLOCK key for a custom key binding. Pressing the key within the game's controls setup menu does nothing (and I can't add the binding "capslock" to my CFG file).

So, I was wondering if there was something that the game internally calls the "capslock" key that I could use in my CFG file to bind it to a command?

Thanks for the help
