there are many companies offering those. of course it costs a certain amount of money per month. just google "v-server" or "root server".
linux experience highly recommended.
Should I just buy a server box?
I think they go for 300 - 400 $ nowadays.

yes,i host servers.but i only host for some germans and only 1 from another country.
why?i pay much money every month for that server.the guys who have a cs2d dedicated on my server,they pay there traffic by there own or there helped me with my projects.
i dont host for people from russia/turkey/england/ whatelse for nothing because i pay much money for that server.
but i can give someone a server for free if he can help me with some IRC/html problems.
the job:
write a serverlist for an IRC network
make it work that i klick on that IRC channel and he directly connect to that channel that i klicked
