@user mafia_man: I have no idea how you can think this. I know that people have different types of connections and routers/modems. That's why I can't provide a general solution for everyone and that's also why I always tell people to read their router/modem manual. It's not possible to make server hosting work automatically for everyone in a magical way.

And you don't have to ask your ISP for the IP. Just visit: http://www.unrealsoftware.de/usgn.php?s=ip
This must be your real public IP unless you are using weird proxy stuff.

You still don't understand, there's two types of ip: Private ones and Public ones.

Private - it's shared with many people, means - problems with downloading from websites like rapidshare, mediafire, etc. Also if somebody's already using for example port 36963 nobody will can connect to your computer, because a router which only your ISP have access to, won't know where it should redirect packets

Public - only you have it, means - no problems.

Private IP's exists because number of IPv4 is limited, that's also why IPv6 has been created.

What? Did you even read the page you linked?
I know the difference between private IPs (IPs in a certain pre-defined address range used for all IPs in local networks) and public IPs (the IP which is visible to others when using the internet). But your explanation is totally unrelated to the terms public and private IP.

It would be new to me that two or more people (which are not using the same internet connection) can have the same public IP at the same time. That doesn't work. Of course most ISPs have dynamic IP pools so the same IP is used by one person on one day and by another person on another day but they never assign the same IP two multiple DIFFERENT customers at the same time.

I don't know how I can explain this, but what I meant is that you can't host servers on computer connected to private network.

Of course you can. You just have to setup the NAT (network address translation from private to public IP and the other way round) correctly. This is done in the router or modem software / web interface. Most people simply don't know how to do that or they don't manage to do it for some reason. But it's clearly possible.

user mafia_man is talking about a real and serious topic here, he's just using the wrong terminology. Most of the time only mobile phones use this system, but nowadays more and more "real" connections are getting the same IPv4 aswell.
