Sopa is a bill saying that the US government will be aloud to discontinue or block access to website in the united states, if it has any ties with any form of piracy. Including (but not limited to) sites like YouTube, Mediafire, Image shack, DeviantART, Unrealsoftware, Newgrounds, Kongergate, and lots more. As an example, if I were to post a torrent on a torrent site, the site would be taken down, understandable, it doesn't stop there though. If I were to post a link to that torrent on twitter, twitter could be taken down. Doesn't stop there either. If I were to post a link to that twitter post here, this site would be blocked to people living in the United States. Big sites like Google have even taken notice, and are saying, "We want SOPA out!" Also, I have to point this out. Anonymous, was supposedly the one(s) who really sparked its attention. So here's my point, help take it down, protest, do everything to stop US internet censorship!

Here's the bill hosted on the us house of representatives.

http://judiciary.house.gov/hearings/pdf/HR%203261%20Managers%20Amendment.pdf

I believe people should read this before protesting against something others have said about this act.

Well, it's not the best thing that ever happend. I heard about this too, not had enough time to read TextCon's link, but anyway, it's not a good thing, you know.

It's not only about piracy, it's about censoring the internet. Also, the websites they "take down" will still be able to get visited but not by the domain name, by IP.

It's not gonna be a fair thing. At first, when you read the title you think about pirate websites from where we've downloaded at least 1 piece of software in our life. But no, it's gonna do more.

Of course! Since that are just 70 pages of material which terminology most people just don't understand.

I think Hollywood, GEMA and co. just should go to hell, where they come from.

Basically most of what you need to know about SOPA in simplified terms. This guy does a great job covering it.

Hmmm... help you protest and do everything to stop Unreal Software being taken down? You could borrow my friend's bazooka.

I think if SOPA isn't taken out, Unreal Software is in real danger because of fuckers on this site stealing file, avatars, and more shit.

Yet, not many people know how to do this. Or even care the slightest.

The problem you get with this bill is that it will LITERALLY destroy the internet just because some greedy corporations want to get more money and control the internet, just like a Totalitarian Government.

It's pretty much already illegal to do anyway. Only a while ago I saw DC throwing out 4 week bans because people thought it was good idea to go posting torrents on the UnrealSoftware Forums.

But like so, it would still suck knowing that one copyrighted item could just destroy a website.

Chances are we'll have very limited sites to use. Most of the websites I use are based in the USA, so if SOPA decides to fuck around with them I'll only have a few good ones left to use.

they just need to host their stuff in a different country. not that hard.
On the outside I may appear like an emotionless sarcastic piece of shit but just like an onion when you peel off more layers you find the exact same thing every single time and you start crying.

SOPA is of course a rather serious matter to the further existence of the Internet as we now it.
But I still don't believe that anyone will ever get anywhere with it.
Firstly I won't even dare to etimate the costs the american government will have if they have to pay hundreds of employees and their equipent so that they can take apart the internet.
Then there is the problem, that as soon as google and Wikipedia are down, there will most likely be a lot less people using the internet, because they cannot connet to their regular sites, most likely have no idea how and where to search for things in the web and to top it all a lot of them would loose their email-adresses (or at least their access to them). That would then lead to public demonstrations, and then sooner or later either SOPA and similar acts will either have to be abandoned, or sooner or later someone will create something like a new internet, and everything could start from the beginning again.

That is my opinion about the worst case should SOPA be accepted.

At least we have politicians that do not support SOPA.
