Mario, i still remember the days i used to play Super Mario 1 and 2, mainly the second one, it was really fun.
I had good times playing Zelda too, but i never managed to finish the game, i was 6 years old, haha.

Not exactly iconic. I just feel like Mario has more personality although it's character development through the story is almost null.

Long time ago I used to play Super Mario Bros. in my NES (which unfortunately died... or perhaps I killed it)
I played Link's Awakening in a GBC emulator years ago (along with Pokemon)

If I were to add more characters to the list I'd choose:
Samus from Metroid
Twinsen from Little Big Adventure
Keen from Commander Keen
Erik, Olaf and Baleog alltogether from The Lost Vikings

I used to play those games a lot and I think that they had pretty solid protagonists, probably not solid enough to be compared with Link or Mario but they're still something.
