If you lack imagination, you can steal a few from those that do.
For example, me & lil thought of a ton of abilities for
Pacman Modded Lua (53) and I thought some for FunField 2D (17), you can also take a look at SuperHero, ZP and many other scripts. Or use your imagination. It does wonders. 
Rainoth. If you have enough Lua scripting skills, you can create a sophisticated Lua script with bunch of some ideas from your mind to add on your server. Rainoth has writtenAbilities. Young people like abilities.

It does wonders.hmm some of that ability stuff is added under normal level unlocks but i could add being able to choose a special ability once you reach a certain level which would drive people to keep playing.
Someone played my server the day through (i left for work and he was here when i came back 11 hours later) just to get a high enough level for a laser gun
It's not necessarily a lack of ideas just a lack of ideas that fit into the structure of my game...
